Here is a very extensive review of the eBookwise 1150 ebook reader. Review It is nicely done and a good read. You can also download a PDF copy for yourself from the site.
I am a little disappointed in the quality of the machine. At first I was amazed at how bright the screen was and how well I could read books, articles, etc. that I would download to it.
That is, until I turned it on with the smartmedia card SLIGHTLY pulled out of the reader (I could have sworn it was put in all the way.)
The machine shut down, and when I tried to boot it back up, the sceen came up with a single cross on the screen, almost as if it was saying "I'm DEAD" and the thing now won't even shut down, even when I hit the power button. The only way I can get it to shut down is to reboot the whole damn machine.
And mind you, folks, all this happened withing the space of a few hours of getting the machine!
I've sent in a message to the support desk, but they gave me the same old "We'll contact you within 24 hours" song and dance.
Meanwhile, last night I curled up with a good book---a PAPERBACK.
I just called the customer support at EBookWise. I had NO IDEA that taking the smartmedia card out of the ebook while it is still on COMPLETELY DESTROYS THE MACHINE!
And yes, I DID read the signs about taking the card out while the machine was still on. My problem was that the card was in the machine, just not ALL THE WAY, completely in the machine.
Why don't they say on the manual WARNING--REMOVING THE SMARTMEDIA CARD WHILE THE MACHINE IS STILL RUNNING WILL RENDER IT INOPERABLE!!!!
Christ, if I know this machine was going to be this much of a pain in the ass, I would NOT have bought it. As it is now, I have a broken machine, software to change rtf, html, txt files into a format that I don't need, and a $30 credit to books that I can't download.
Gee, what a marvel of technology.
I should have stuck to my GBA Reader--an attachment I got for my Gameboy advance--the screen is only as big as a GBA, it doesn't have a bookmark, the typeface is crap, but AT LEAST IT STILL WORKS, EVEN IF I PULL OUT THE COMPACT FLASH CARD!!!!
Well, apparently when the smartmedia card is not the way its supposed to be, or taken out while the machine is on, it CAN damage the card, the machine or BOTH---but they don't tell you that....they just say "don't do it."
But all is not lost. There is a firmware patch that will restore the firmware on the machine. If you should be so heinous as to violate their "law", they will send it to you (funny how they wouldn't just put it on the website as a downloadable file...naah...that'd make it too easy and be far too logical.)
I need your advice! I want to buy ebookwise for reading ebooks that I download from free online libraries such as PG, lib.ru, etc - so will it be good for this purpose? Because I am certainly not planning on BUYING my books when there is literally millions of great books available free online! So can I use ebookwaise for reading .txt and .html files or is there something that would prevent me from simply downloading an ebook in .txt format and uploading it to my ebookwise? What else can you suggest? Thanks!
